We made it to Burgos today. Luggage and all! We went to the airport to get our bags and they said it was lunch time so they couldn’t get the bags for us, we would have to go get them ourselves. Well we went and the lady there said it ‘wasn’t her responsibility’ so we ended up going to another counter and finally – there they were! Mom kissed our bags she was so relieved! Haha. So we left the charming little apartment we stayed in made our way to Burgos. I LOVE THIS CITY. It is so absolutely picturesque and enchanting. It is absolutely gorgeous you guys. It is so beautiful. I’ve been to a lot of cities, even ones in Italy and southern France, and this is by far my favorite. Because it is not all city, nor all country. It is the most wonderful mix of metropolitan and countryside I have ever seen. Gorgeous antique cathedrals, cobble stone roads with men on bikes riding down them, canals, trees everywhere, pretty little paths with benches by the river, old beautiful buildings with ivy climbing up the sides. there is an air of bubbly excitement – but mixed with tranquility and slow pace. It has all the vitality of a big city, but all the charm and peacefulness of a small village. It is made up of one large center area with a city square, perfect little cafes, old Spanish women smling and hobbling down the streets, children running and yelling “si! Si! Si!”, and bustling streets. But there are numerous villages that dot the surrounding miles. Each is about 10 minutes from the next, and they are the MOST enchanting places ever. The poppies are in bloom everywhere and the mountains are dotted with olive trees and vineyards. The houses are so cute with their red clay roofs, and each little village has a small playground in the middle where the kids can play together. It is so cheerful and peaceful you don’t even believe it! I feel like I can breathe here, but I also feel like I am in the center of things. The two girls, Mikaela and Elisa are just adorable and quickly won our hearts when we got here! They are 4 and 2 and are just precious. I am looking out the window right now and there is an old stone building with windmills circiling in the background, above a serene little patch of poppies on a rolling green hill. The sun is setting and everything is breath taking. The people are all so friendly and hospitable as well. Everyone we meet gives two kisses on either cheek, and of course a big smile. I am catching on to Spanish a little bit more everyday. It is a lot easier to understand than Mexican/South American Spanish because there is no accent and the words are said more clearly. So that is helpful! Tomorrow we are having a barbecue with some of Brian and Noelia’s church friends, and I am excited! Tonight they are going to youth group (which is actually college age people), but mom and I are staying back because we are so tired. Things don’t end here until about 1 am, and don’t start until about 10 am. Brian said to think of it as just moving the clock back four hours. Two meals in the morning and then lunch at 2-4pm, another meal at 6 and then supper at 9-10pm, bed around midnight. Kind of like college J.
I am quickly falling in love with this place! Ahhhh.
Adios!
