This morning I had my first day at Burgos Yagüe Hospital! It's been a crazy few days, but really good! We met a ton of people this weekend and definitely got immersed in the culture! Friday night I went to the church with Brian where he and Noelia work and met a bunch of college aged students. And as soon as I walked in, I ran into 3 Americans! They were actually from Purdue! How crazy is that?? They have been studying this semster in Seville. After church, we all went out together until about 2 am. I got to talking with everybody, got to practice my Spanish, and made lots of new great friends :) It's such a great city and such an amazing country. I really love it here.
Last night they dropped me off at Pilar's house so that I could leave with her early in the morning for my first day at the hospital. It was a little overwhelming at first, as almost nobody spoke English at all! But they were all really patient and kind and I met a couple nursing students that spoke a little English and they quickly took me under their wing :) I ended up having a lot of fun with the nurses by the end of the shift and was sad to go! I learned SO much! There are so many similarities between Spanish and American health care, but yet sooo many differences. The first of course being that healthcare is free in Spain! This means that the nurses and doctors are employed by the government and that creates a lot of differences in employment, pay, and day to day activities for these professionals.
I really love the culture here! I especially like the way they do their meals. Not only do they eat way better than we do in America, but the way they eat is different as well. They eat 5 meals a day, and take long breaks for each one. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day and can take anywhere from 1-6 hours! There are courses for each meal, starting with salads, then meats, followed by desert (usually fruit) and then coffee. Everything is very healthy, which of course I love :) And they have no concept of eating "on the go". There are no to-go cups for coffee and only one drive through in the entire city. People always take time out to eat, and always eat together. I think this is a splendid practice.
I just found out that this weekend we are going to northern Spain to hike the mountains, see the ocean, visit a monestary (with Gregorian chanters!! So excited!), and just relax. Ahhh! I can't wait.
Hasta Luego!
